What does it mean to be “An American”?

Of course the quick easy, legal answer is that they were born in America, born to American citizen parents or went through the legal process to become a naturalized citizen. However, that barely even scratches the surface of what it means to be An American, because to be brutally honest there are a lot of citizens of this great nation who are NOT an American at all in the deeper sense. In essence there are three types of Americans...The recent 9-11 remembrances got me thinking… Always a dangerous thing. That thinking was followed by a question from one of our followers, who asked me to define a III%er. So, I gave that some thought and expanded on it to try and define what it means to be “An American”. What makes someone an American? Of course the quick easy, legal answer is that they were born in America, born to American citizen parents or went through the legal process to become a naturalized citizen. However, that barely even scratches the surface of what it means to be An American, because to be brutally honest there are a lot of citizens of this great nation who are NOT an American at all in the deeper sense. In essence there are three types of Americans; An American (with a capital A) who embraces the ideals and principles that this nation was founded upon, an american (with a little a) who somewhat supports those principles and ideals but doesn’t really engage in the process or fight to protect them and an american in the legal sense, in name only, that doesn’t really care for the principles and ideals but enjoys the benefits of being an american. What I am talking about here is what it means to be An American with a capital A.
